Wire gauge (AWG) is calculated on the cross sectional diameter of the conductor (copper) of the wire.
the formula is: The diameter of an AWG wire is determined according to the formula in the linky below.

Having said this from your OP of a wire at 4.8mm in diameter, it is slightly bigger than AWG 5 (4.621 mm Dia.)

Having said this, it looks from the picture that the diameter includes the insulation, so I would not look for #5 wire per se....
