Thank you for the "now & then" photo layout. The car in front of the dry cleaners looks like something a lot of my friends' families used to have. The Market & Castro Tower had a rack of vinyl. But it consisted of 12" singles, which, as you said, were hard to find.
In 1987, some of my schoolmates and I were interested in audio. We were unaware of the term, "High-end audio." So we did venture to stores, such as Eber Electronic, The Good Guys, Harmony, Maybrun's, Performance Audio, Whole Earth Access, and World of Sound.
Barbra was a classmate, so I spent a lot of time with her. I want to say it was early October 1986. On a Friday after school, she and I took Muni Metro across S.F. Somewhere on Market near 4th, was a record store, perhaps Wherehouse. There, I bought Wham's Music From The Edge of Heaven CD, which I still have somewhere. But anyway, Barbra came over afterward. Since she lived out in Visitacion Valley (which, back then, was high-crime), my dad did not allow her to go home by herself. So after dinner, Barbra and I got in the car, and my dad drove her home.
Throughout my sophomore year, Theresa and I had PE during the same periods (different classes/teachers, though), so we ran into each other all the time.
It goes without saying, that we grew up with the music. And on occasion, audio itself came into play. These experiences laid the groundwork, for some of us eventually entering "high-end audio."
