Consider this: 1) When the shield is connected at the preamp end it becomes an extension of the preamp shielding system, essentially placing the whole interconnect run inside the shielded preamp box. 2) When the shield is connected at the SUT (source) end it is now separate from the preamp shield system and is like an antenna picking up whatever noise is induced from the air, SUT box, turntable which can be induced into the signal wires.
Some interconnect cable manufacturers seem to want you to connect shield at the source end but for reasons stated, I disagree. This thinking I believe is carried over from the power industry where it is essential to ground the cable shield at the source end for safety reasons.
