Kimber GQ-Mini-Cu, Part 5

During our sophomore year (1990-91) at UC Santa Cruz, my friend Tuyet and I both lived in dorms, at adjacent residential colleges. While I was at Crown, she was at Merrill. That year, we spent a lot of time together, walking to classes, eating in dining halls, and just hanging out in each other's room.

During the Winter 1991 quarter, when I had a Sony D-10 Discman, AudioQuest Mini-Adapter Z, and AR Powered Partners, Tuyet's roommate "Danny" (her name was Danielle, but she preferred to be called Danny) needed the room. Danny's brother, who was also college-age, was coming up from SoCal. Tuyet could have gone to other rooms, but she asked to stay with me.

My dorm was like, as some said, a log cabin. That is, it wasn't well-insulated, and got cold overnight. So Tuyet brought over her more luxurious blanket, which, combined with my inexpensive comforter, did keep us warm. After the parties died down, my dorm got really quiet.

Because the college bed was a narrow Twin XL, we were on our sides. Tuyet then flipped to face me. "OMG," she pointed to the ceiling, "Do you hear that?"

Sigh, I guess one of my coed upstairs neighbors was having sex.

During the Spring 1991 quarter, Danny had Dusty Springfield's Reputation on CD. But Danny and Tuyet did not, in their dorm room, have a CD player. So, I would bring over my D-10. However, in order to feed their mini-stereo, we needed a cable with 3.5mm mini-headphone jacks at both ends. Anyway, Tuyet and Danny had me stack their beds in a bunk. That created space, for us to groove to Springfield's "In Private." Written and produced by the Pet Shop Boys, "In Private" had Springfield playing the other woman, with a married man.

I had stacked their beds, so that Tuyet's was on top. I slept with her, up there. The three of us were winding down our late-night chats. Using an open palm, Tuyet whacked the ceiling, "Goddamn it! Keisha (who lived above Tuyet and Danny) is having sex again."

The next day, Tuyet, Danny, and I ate brunch in their dining hall. After that, since it was a sunny and very warm day, we sunbathed/took an outdoor nap.

"Goddamn it!" exclaimed Danny, "I'm just another white girl who burns easily." We happened to have a camera, and I still have a photo of Danny and her tan-line. "I should have used more suntan lotion. And maybe I just should have taken off the frickin' bikini."

Which brings us to the Kimber GQ-Mini-Cu. One end has heatshrink wrap, which reads, "GQ-MINI CU."

The other end says, "Kimber Kable." You might as well have signal flow in the direction of the writing.

In order to place such a 3.5mm headphone plug to 3.5mm headphone plug cable on the audiodharma Cable Cooker, you need two adapters. Both should have 2 male RCAs on one end, a single female 3.5mm jack on the other.

So this is how you "Cook" such a cable. We listened in 1-day intervals/increments. Honestly, the majority of burn-in occurs in the first day. After the 4th day of Cook time, the GQ-Mini-Cu was sounding dull, congested, slow, soft, and warm.

"Okay fine," says Thuy, "Call it three days" as the optimal Cook time for the Kimber GQ-Mini-Cu. Thuy's Honda CR-V does not have a CD player. So if she wants to listen to CDs in the car, she needs to provide a portable CD player. Like Tuyet's mini-stereo, Thuy's CR-V has an auxiliary input, via 3.5mm minijack. Increasingly, this is the application, where cables with 3.5mm headphone jacks at both ends are being utilized.

Although the cable portion of the GQ-Mini-Cu is soft and bendable, you will not want excess cabling in your car. If 0.5m is too short, and 1.0m is too long, yes, you may order this in a 0.75m length. I do not know the answer to this, so you will have to ask Kimber, if the GQ-Mini-Cu can be supplied with a right-angle 3.5mm plug.
