Kimber GQ-Mini-Cu, Part 3

In September 1991, I moved into UC Santa Cruz's Crown-Merrill apartments. My housemates and I cobbled together an audio/video system. I contributed a Sony D-10 Discman; Monster splitter, IL-400, and Original speaker cable; and an AudioQuest Mini-Adapter Z. The latter went from a 3.5mm headphone jack to two male RCAs.

I met up with my friend Bella. She had an older brother, Bert, who was a senior. They made it a point not to live together. In general, Bella was a really nice person. But she kept needling her brother. She called him "Bad Back Bert," "Bad Bowels Bert," and "Bad Breath Bert." At a beach, Bella was applying sunblock on Bert. She pulled down the back of his trunks, and laughed, "Bare Butt Bert!"

Since the beach was clothing-optional, and hardly anyone was around, Bella removed her bikini. She good-naturedly said, "Okay fine, you can call me Bare Buns Bella or Bare Boobs Bella."

In using the soft-serve machine, I botched mine, while Bella did a really nice job with hers. In taking this photo, we switched cones, to make it look like Bella did the hack job. You know what? Bella would be one, who'd borrow my AQ Mini-Adapter Z. She would go on to say that the Mini-Adapter Z made the OEM throwaway patchcords seem like my messy job, with the soft-serve machine, LOL!

At the end of 1991, Michael Jackson made a comeback, with the album, Dangerous. He had a huge hit, with "Black Or White," whose video was extremely popular. Over the holidays, Bella's roommate, Becks, would pick up the CD. Bella and Becks had a boombox, with RCA auxiliary line-level input. I brought over my Sony D-10 and AQ Mini-Adapter Z.

Becks liked to sleep nude, so Bella called her "Bare-skin Becks." In early 1992, Bella had an idea. She argued that, with makeup, she could make Becks, who was pale, look like Michael Jackson. What do you think?

Which brings us to the Kimber GQ-Mini-Cu. It belongs to my friend Scylla, who doesn't particularly care for Michael Jackson's music. Scylla notes that modern-day electronics do not have CD players. But she has and likes CDs. So in order to add CD playback to stereos, Scylla brings around a portable CD player. It often needs a 3.5mm-to-two-male-RCA cable.

This may or may not endear her to audiophiles, but Scylla considered several brands, including AudioQuest, Cardas, Nordost, Tara Labs, and Wireworld. She had previously tried various line-level interconnects from these brands, many of which she and I have already written about. For her portables, which aren't detailed or high-rez, she just felt that Kimber's house sound would work best. Moreover, with the black-colored mesh, the Kimber GQ-Mini-Cu holds its shape. Yet, it is not stiff, thick, unwieldy, or massive.

Each channel's white-and-yellow jacketed leads are about 5" long, from heatshrink wrap to RCA. While the female RCA jacks on preamps are closely-spaced, if you are using powered speakers with their own input, the pair will only be a few inches apart!
