When I wanted to return an item recently I found that their website is very difficult to navigate when you want to return something.
I finally contacted the seller who told me to list the reason for the return as "item no longer needed". I explained that it was defective and tried to return it as such. I realized then that if you claim it's defective they require you to jump through more hoops - such as including a photo or video. If you simply say that the "item is no longer needed", the process is much easier and nothing else is required.
After I figured that out the process went OK and I was issued a refund promptly.
Seems like this is to hide the poor quality of some of their items and to discourage returns. They obviously try to make it easy to buy and much more difficult to return.
You might also want to do a general internet search on "How to return Aliexpress purchases" or similar. There is lots of info with tips available.
