Yes, there's lots of cables and everyone hears differently. That said, Some cables do work better with certain speakers than others. Asking someone to at least point you in the right (relatively) can cut down on the effort.
In my case, I ended up trying the cables the speaker manufacturer uses at shows. I figured he knew something about compatibility, and it turns out that I agree with him.
