By Fall 1993, MTV and VH1 had introduced reality TV shows. But they still did play a few music videos, including the one for Bryan Adams' "Please Forgive Me."
In 1993, we were still in, or just out of, college. So we drove around in economy subcompact cars. Around Thanksgiving, the Bay Area days were shorter, but still warm and bone-dry. Trying to get home to San Francisco, we were stuck in traffic on I-80, along El Cerrito, Albany, Berkeley, and Emeryville. My friends Jimmy and Hye-Sung were in the backseat, facing away from each other. With their heads kind of on their rear windows, Jimmy and Hye-Sung were dozing off, when Bryan Adams' "Please Forgive Me" came on. Their eyes closed, Jimmy and Hye-Sung mouthed the words to "Please Forgive Me."
In December 1993, I brought in three XLO Pro PL-1500 powercords. I had an after-Christmas bowling tournament in Las Vegas, so Scylla, Jimmy, Hye-Sung, and I decided to make a road trip out of it. Before the tournament, we got as far as Albuquerque. No, we did not make it to Santa Fe, where Stereophile was then headquartered.
Hye-Sung said she appreciated Stereophile's publishing of test bench measurements. While they did not reliably predict what a component might sound like, the measurements could help root out instances where said component might not work in your room or system. As far as the writing of reviews was concerned, Hye-Sung criticized Stereophile, for using "music no one knows or cares about." She much preferred TAS, 'cuz they were not as allergic to popular music, which, of course regular people listened to.
In Albuquerque, I think Hye-Sung sort of propositioned Jimmy. He rejected her advances.
In Vegas, Hye-Sung looked at Jimmy, and jokingly said that any man and woman (no same-sex marriage back then) could get married. Jimmy told her to [buzz] off.
Back home in San Francisco, the XLO Pro PL-1500s awaited. Immediately after New Year's Day 1994, the Theta Data Basic arrived. Thus, we used a PL-1500 on that CD transport, a Theta Cobalt 307 DAC, and a B&K Pro10MC preamp. The sound was kind of monophonic, not much of a soundstage. The images were all kind of the same size, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. But they felt stuck together, like a Rubik's Cube. Although the music moved in concert with itself, overall, everything, especially the initial strike, was a step slow.
In 2003, we received an audiodharma Cable Cooker. Now, we are able to treat the PL-1500 properly, via the Ground Breaker adapter. Honestly, after one day of Cook time, the PL-1500 is transformed. After 4 days of Cook time, the PL-1500 sounded over-Cooked: tubby midbass, and a lack of air.
At the end of 1993, Jimmy and Hye-Sung were more than just a step slow or apart. But in 2003, while we were passing the Cable Cooker around, something happened, and Jimmy and Hye-Sung got engaged (to each other). They got married in 2004. No, Bryan Adams' "Please Forgive Me" was not played at their wedding banquet.
If you over-Cook the XLO Pro PL-1500, be patient, give it a few days of regular playing time. Hey, go on a road trip, but do mask up!
