Buddy vs. friend

We're all products of our environment. And if you went to large, inner city, coeducational public schools, well, that was a major influencing force. If an audiophile had been my classmate, he would have gone through the same things, cultures, and events.

I don't know about others, but I thought it was interesting, when we guys were all buddy-buddy, on account of team sports. But the guys weren't friends. Not in the sense, that you could have deep talks, conversations, and discussions. Since I did not have any sisters, listening to the smart girls was fascinating, educational, and interesting. To break the ice, you'd throw out/up what kinds of music you liked. If, for example, the girls liked adult contemporary, and you liked thrash metal, then you could find common ground, meet in the middle, and share hard rock/glam metal. Several of the girls were in the high school's orchestra, so they knew music theory. Which made it easy or more open, when they explored the burgeoning pop music developments. In turn, that sharpened you, as an audiophile. You understood audio as a means or vehicle to explore music, and get deeper into the ones you liked.

I don't need anybody to agree with me, or have the same likes. So amongst the greatest joy I derive from this hobby is when other audiophiles share their experiences. So when I write about popular brands, such as AudioQuest, Cardas, and Kimber, I sit back, and wait for the emails to come in. Audiophiles from all walks of life will tell me about the products, their lives, their musical tastes, etc.

I warn other Cable Cooker owners, to cherish their anonymity. 'Cuz once word gets out that you have a Cooker, everyone wants to use it. Audiophiles arrange, to have me Cook their wares. Only about 10% give me permission to write about their wares. So you don't see or read about the other 90%. Most just want their cables to be treated, and then immediately shipped back. However, during these exchanges, when the audiophile offers up information, that forces me reckon with my own experiences. Everyday, something an audiophile says will jar my memory, bring about a new-for-me perspective. In that manner, you can fill in missing pieces, ask questions, hammer out resolutions, and make your memories clearer (or less confused/nebulous).

Audiophiles like to give me a bad time, for living relatively close to Napa and the surrounding wineries. My old friends typically do not drink alcohol. So instead of wine, I got to try things like funnel cake. If funnel cake goes well with wine, the other audiophiles will have to report :-)
