First off the 8" separation should be adequate IMHO.As Jon said, if you use a shield it should be at the power cord side of things. I'd just connect it to the safety ground where your power cables plug in. At RF your system is more or less referenced to power line ground so you want to bleed noise to that same node hoping to make it common mode within your system and thus ignored.
