For the last several years i have (mostly) been using a diy copper foil cable made out of an Alphacore inductor. Two separate lengths unattached to each other and terminated with Cardas/Vampire spades. Insulation is just Scotch tape.By design this cable is high inductance/low capacitance, completely unprotected mechanically (but also not very capable of vibrations at low frequencies due to the low mass) and using a dubious dielectric.
Compared to my commercial cables (nothing special - $500-800 range), the foil offers much better clarity, speed and separation and also excellent, homogenous tone across the range.
Downside? Horrible looks. The copper reacts with the glue on the tape and this creates all kinds of atrocious hues. The whole design is very delicate and after a few months of careful use one can see wrinkled areas in the copper.
So, I wonder if a commercial cable with similar strenghts exists for less than $1000. Preferably using a better dielectric and a sturdy construction.
