With vinyl it can be a matter of degrees, too.I've bought LP's that I initially thought were good only to discover more minor issues later, like minor inner groove damage or a little bit of mistracking static on peaks. Usually, I add those LP's back to the shopping list.
I hate what you're describing, though: the good looking LP that's been played out (more likely chiseled out by someone's crappy equipment). Oh well, every LP has a story. :)
