Absolutely I clean records before listening. Best vinyl thing I ever got for playback was my first record cleaning machine.
The point of my question was - if others failed to clean records well, would that damage the record to the point of compromising the ability to subsequently clean the record. Many of us buy used records and best guess is that the previous owner didn't clean them all that well. I have bought quite a few relatively cruddy looking records that after my cleaning sounded brand new.
Caveat - a lot was classical that may not have been played too many times. My point was simply the failure of the previous owner's failure to clean the record well didn't compromise the record. If they played it with a stylus that tracked at 100 grams, well, all bets are off (of course). But its not the dirt, its the other abuse.
