RE: That's where I got my Koetsu and Linn deck

First, I never was shopping at those price points back when these products were the latest audio big new thing.

But I always considered it strange that only semi precious rocks were used for cartridge bodies, and that one type of stone was never identified as a superior material. the various types of stone seemed to be interchangeable, despite the ease of analysis . At one point, they even threw coral into the mix.

I understand that the asian culture attaches intrinsic worth to just the presence of various stones , in much the same way indigenous people of the American southwest attach meaning in the color blue, and incorporated turquoise into decorations for that reason.

But assorted rocks always seemed less than a scientific solution to me, which I viewed as just a continuation of the needlessly fancy presentation boxes used as part of the intrinsic product appeal.

one thing about business , success breeds imitation. The fact that they alone championed incorporating semi precious stones into a phono cartridge , with all the other builders leaving that path alone , when their are plenty of regular rocks of various densities and hardness that wouldn't have infringed on their design, had me seeing this product line as being conceived around a value that meant nothing to me , a non serious product for people who wanted something special and fancy., despite the performance reports, I saw it only as a novelty product with a lot of un-needed, useful in conception only, frills. Give me a hundred dollars in my pocket and skip the fancy eventual landfill stuffing packaging.

The only cartridge packaging that ever mattered to me was when shure designed the packaging to also serve as a dedicated alinement tool , where you simply slipped the, dedicated to the shape of the cartridge, carrier onto the turntable spindle in two locations and then tightened the screws , alignment done. every cartridge should be sold with such a device.
