RE: Just try

It seemed fairly obvious that the OP was taking about drivers that would normally be installed in a cabinet - so not a planar.

Planars don't need a cabinets, but are far more room dependent than other speaker types. I was hoping to improve on my 17-year old horn speakers by moving to electrostatics, so I bought (after a great showroom demo and rave reviews) a pair of GDP 18K electrostatics, but sadly they didn't like my room's characteristics. They had to be sold and I kept the old horns until I found better ones used, and more recently the latest model.

Reason for els (and probably Maggies too) sounding bad in my room - they need a wall behind them to take advantage of the 50% of their energy that's projected backwards. In my room this wall is 12 ft behind one and 15 ft behind the other and the "wall" is floor-to-ceiling glass. Maggies, Martin Logans, etc no good there at all.

Could you say what your Maggies would sound like without their frames!
