RE: $1000 Dac Shootout: Topping / Denafrips / SMSL

I've had $5000 dollar DACs all the way down to about $200 dollars. IMHO the sweet spot used to be about $2000 or so with audiophile brands. In recent years I'm finding that about $1000 will get you an outstanding DAC if you're willing to explore beyond the golden ear audiophile brands. That includes Chi-fi and pro-audio brands that rarely make the radar among traditional old school audiophile types.

Presently running:

- SMSL D400EX DAC
- 7 Year Old PS Audio NuWave DSD DAC

Without mentioning brands (which I've done in the past) my worse sounding DACs included a $5000 unit from a sought after audiophile brand. Same goes for a $2500 unit. Both from well established companies in the audiophile market space. Both were smooth but veiled, dynamically too polite, and one was noticeably rolled-off up top in the treble.
